10 - Almost Perfection

10 Rating Definition: Nearly perfect; if you skipped even one hole, you would miss something worth seeing. If you haven’t seen all the courses in this category, you don’t know how good golf architecture can get. Call your travel agent immediately, get to see some of the best london golf courses now. Remember, the modified rating scale tops out at 10 and only considers the quality of golf around London. If we threw in Pine Valley, Muirfield or Cypress Point they would no doubt score an 11 or 12!

9 - Outstanding

9 Rating Definition: An outstanding course, certainly one of the best london golf courses, with no weaknesses in regard to condition, length or poor holes. You should see this course sometime in your life, but it doesn't quite reach perfection.

Rye – Old Course

Old School classic links designed by Harry Colt where a jacket and tie is a must

8 - Best in Region

8 Rating Definition: One of the very best courses in its region (although there are more 8s in some places and none in others), and worth a special trip to see. Could have some drawbacks, but these will clearly be spelled out, and it will make up for them with something really special in addition to the generally excellent layout.

7 - Excellent

7 Rating Definition: An excellent course, worth checking out if you get anywhere 1-2 hours drive maximum. You can expect to find soundly designed, interesting holes, good course conditioning and a pretty setting, if not necessarily anything unique to the world of golf.

6 - Very Good

6 Rating Definition: A very good course, definitely worth a game if you’re in town, but not necessarily worth a special trip to see. It shouldn’t disappoint you. Not the very best London Golf courses but still very good indeed.

Blackmoor Golf Club

Colt’s design principles have stood the test of time at this Heathland classic

North Hants Golf Club

An enchanting heathland course which boasts the home of US Open winner Justin Rose

Stoke Park Golf Club

The Grove Golf Club

5 - Above Average

5 Rating Definition: Well above the average golf course, but the middle of the rating scale. A good course to choose if you’re in the vicinity and looking for a game, but don’t spend another day away from home to see it, unless your home is in the middle of nowhere.

Berkhamsted Golf Club

The charming and bunker free James Braid design claiming the oldest course in Hertfordshire

Fulwell Golf Club

The One London Golfer website has been created to share and promote the very best London golf courses. There are hundreds of golf courses scattered across the many counties around the capital, and this website will only promote the best. It is my belief that if a golf course is not featured above as one of the best London golf courses and rated a Doak Scale 5 or higher then it is not worthy to be included in this website.

This is not to be elitist, or exclusive. Its to keep the website as a resource for the very best golf around London and to uphold the quality required. If a golf course is included as one of the best London golf courses then it meets my approval as one which should be played. However, in life not all things are equal.

I would love to have your comments, feedback and constructive criticisms of the ratings above. Do you agree with them all? Please do post your comments below in the comments section and we can have a healthy discussion about the ratings.
